Here are a few studies I came across regarding intermittent fasting:

John Hopkins magazine article on Intermittent fasting.

Considering some amazing claims by modern science that based on still ongoing research let us read through my notes of what ekadasi (11th day from full moon or no moon day) vrata upvasam entails from the speech of my guru.

I stress on ongoing research, because eventually the other items listed below will be found as well. I am confident. How long from now? Who knows? It took western science 500 yrs to get here.

This vrata per the sastra (orthodox rules) are expected to be followed by everyone without miss by EVERYONE who has any inclination toward spirituality.

The main point of this ekadsi vratam is this:

Fast for about 24-36 hours without sleep or water or any food (for the most part: see below). And this fast is to be taken up every 11th day after the full moon and after no moon (intermittent).

Here are my rough notes:

Sarvesham Bho janam Dvayam kartavyam sarvesham:
1. Shuddhopavasa Prathamaha: nirjalopavasam,: Fasting without even taking water.
2. Sat katha sravanam thattha : bhagwad kadha sravanam till dvadasi -- Listening to puranic stories
3. Jagarana while listening to above bhagwad katha --- On the night of
4. Same upavasam/Fasting rules are true on MahaSivaratri, Gokulashtami, Sri Rama Navami
5. Dvadasi parana (eating food on dvadasi/12thday) as soon as dvadasi starts: First thing in the morning after sandhyavandanam and maha naivedyam to swami in the simhasana (SeethaRamaSwamy). shradavunu ayi thinaali with dhoti. Eat only at your home only.
6. Don't leave home for naimitthika thidhi's like Mukkoti ekadasi.
7. If you are in another place (NOT on your home), you should not do nirjalopavasam
8. On dvadasi thithi time.. by the time dvadasi time starts, finish sandhya vanadanam and mahanavedyam and start eating on the minute dvadasi begins.
9. during listen to satyanarayana vratam, vishno sahasranamam, tyagaraja songs....listen to pravachanaalu, Ramanama rachana.
10. Dont eat pulla and theeya padharthaalu for three days before.
11. Find a cool place to sit through the day and night..
12. For three days before eat very satvic food.
13. thejokshayam should not be done. Practice Celibacy: manasa Vaacha, karmana.
14. aaamarana nirahara deeksha maha papam....pshachatvam isthaaru.
15. if someone feels like they are going to pass off /die... u r allowed to eat a banana or some water; Of course only in an extreme situation.
16. Per Sastram: utthara dvaram is only for SriRanga Kshteram: devudi Pallaki ventana manam vellali.
17. Normal Ekadasi: Allowed to eat one or two fruits or some milk.
18. Less than 8 yr old and gt 80 yr old or someone with a medical condition (someone with diabetes, pregnant women etc) that will result in some dangerous health concern due to fasting shld NOT do upavasam.

The next time you laugh at some orthodox rules of the the vedic lineage. Think again.

Think!
